Dean on the Green ~ Welcome to the 1st Days of Spring!

March 22nd, 2018... Welcome to the 1st days of Spring!

It is time for a course update.

The course survived the winter without incident... so far! All winter work has been completed with minor clean up left for spring.

The turf dept. has planned a strategy for the next few weeks. Opening day has always been based on weather, ground conditions and turf health. The long range forecast has us still in minus numbers at night (cold/frozen ground), with no growth. With this current weather, we anticipate bringing staff back on April 9th.

As in recent years, when the ground is free of frost & dry, we will start our spring opening protocol.

Followed protocol when opening the course:

  • Once the snow is gone & frost is out of the ground, we will start course cleanup.
  • Winter tree work & fall construction projects are also cleaned up at this time.
  • Aerating greens, tees & fairways is completed before we open. Spring aeration before opening is an important cultural practice to prepare the turf for a busy summer of golf. This timing also minimizes disruption to members during the peak golfing season.
  • Our bunkers will be cleaned of debris, probed & sand added where required.
  • Most importantly... 12 / 15 °C soil temperatures are required for active turf growth to start. This is especially important on our bentgrass putting greens.

As for opening... Mother Nature is in charge...hopefully we begin to see warmer overnight temperatures.

Don’t forget to look through our website page “Around the Green” for new course information & blogs.

Here’s to a great season!!
