July weather has arrived with high temperatures and little rain. The course is now depending on our irrigation system to keep it green and playable. You will see throughout the day hand & roller base watering. Roller bases are watering areas still in play that are not fully irrigated by our automatic system.
The Greens are closely monitored throughout the day and hand syringed, when necessary. When we go into these summer stress conditions... heat, drought, heavy traffic etc., health becomes our main concern. The small Poa patches remaining on greens, are feeling this stress. It’s particularly noticeable on greens 2,7,9,11. The Poa may be weak but still actively growing. The bent is doing well in the heat and continues to move into these weaker areas. You may see more bentgrass plugging into these thin areas, but nothing to close a green over.
Collars & approaches are dealing with traffic, mainly on the front 9 where heavy play is concentrated.
On our last maintenance Monday, we vented greens with small holes for plant oxygen uptake. These holes disappeared quickly but did make greens softer last week. With daily rolling, greens are firming back up.
Also keep in mind, prolonged high temperature stress will have us cutting back on maintenance procedures, i.e. double cutting & rolling greens. We have not reached this point yet but will keep members well informed if maintenance changes.
Enjoy the heat of the summer but also be careful, keeping hydrated during these times is a necessity!!
