Turf Blog ~ Spring Start

April 26, 2016 Dean Baker

The course is officially open. Welcome to the 2016 season.

We wintered very well. There was no winter damage this year and only a small amount of cleanup from winter tree work.

The course is slowly starting to wake up. The turf is turning green, but will need warmer temps. for growth. Cutting heights are adjusted to spring conditions and will change as the better weather arrives. Greens are healthy & thick with growth as they continue to mature. Regular (weekly) topdressings will help continue to firm the surfaces.

As we move through spring, our 2 main focuses will be cleaning up (sodding) winter projects & weeds. Preventative spraying for crabgrass control, along with regular spring broadleaf weed protection, will be completed late April into May. Signs will be posted in advance of spray dates.

Other projects you will see early this season, the garden work adjacent to #16 green & the clubhouse. The long awaited renovation for the 16 green hill side, will begin in May. Clubhouse garden renovations will also be ongoing, removing older shrub material with a new colourful look that will enhance our beautiful Clubhouse.

We are off to an exciting start this year with the golf course ready for the busy BGCC calendar.
We wish everyone a great season!
