Welcome to the 2019 Golf Season! Only a few weeks before the start of golf! Your Ladies Executive is very excited about the activities we have planned for this upcoming season. Kindly take a few minutes to read this newsletter, as you sit by your pool in sunny parts of the world or by your fireplace in Canada with a glass of wine, so you can see what you have to look forward to.
It’s important to note that a number of changes have been implemented based on the results from last year’s forum and survey. The minutes and resolutions arising from both can be viewed by clicking here.

Sign-up begins April 2nd for Opening Day, Pink Ball, Match Play, Golf Clinics, Team Play, “My Best Score”.
Opening & Closing Day
In an effort to expedite the evening celebrations, please note that dinners will start at 6:00 p.m., instead of 6:30 p.m. As per last year, lady members will continue to have the ability to sign up as a foursome for Opening and Closing Days. This does not preclude you from signing up as a single, a twosome or a threesome and the Pro Shop will create your team. We are also planning on opening the bar in the ladies lounge while you are getting ready for dinner and during cocktail time.
“New Golf Rules” Seminar for all Members
Mr. John Sharp from the GAO will provide an overview of the new Golf Rules on Thursday, May 2nd at 6:30 p.m. Please sign-up online for this seminar if you plan on attending. Rule Books will be available for purchase at a cost of $6.50.
Four new games are being introduced: Pink Ball, Trouble, My Best: Front vs Back & *Itch in the Ditch (I bet you can’t wait to find out what this one is about!). A description of each game will be provided online, as you sign up on the calendar. The four tournament lunches will include details about the menu and price when you sign up. We will also continue with “Fun Prizes”.
Birdie Tree Update
Simply e-mail your Vice-Captain, Jayne Riley at email@example.com with the following information: Date of Birdie / Hole # / Name of one other person you played with.
“My Best Score”/ Ringer Board
As with the Birdie Tree, My Best Score, will now only count on Tuesdays. This event will run from May 14th to September 3rd. The cost will remain at $10. Participants will be divided into handicap flights. After your first game, you will enter your score hole-by-hole on the chart posted on the bulletin board in the Ladies’ Locker Room. Every time you play on Tuesdays, you replace the score on any holes where you scored better than the previous round. Prizes will be awarded for the best scores in each flight.
Based on the results of the survey, Team Play will be played on Thursdays, as opposed to Tuesdays. We hope that this will allow teams the flexibility to play together if they so wish and possibly socialize after the game. We hope that it might also increase pace of play on Tuesdays and make Tuesdays League games less complicated.
- Jayne Riley, our Vice Captain will be taking over the role of Convenor.
- The Team Play Opening Draft Party will be held on Thursday, May 9th. The cost will remain at $75.00 and this covers the draft party, the “pay-outs” as well as the food at the Closing Party.
- The number of Team Play days will remain at 12 (9 regular games and 3 playoff games). In an effort to reduce the pressure of everyone having to show up on Team Play Day, a set maximum number of players will count.
Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) Events
Many of you have asked about RCGA tournaments held throughout the season. This RCGA Women’s Division Pin Round Award is a net competition. This is a nationally sponsored Stroke Play competition, less full handicap, to be played on the member club course, 18 holes under the same conditions on specific days. These should not exceed 10 rounds, but a minimum of 6 is recommended. We have 8 planned this year. Winners are presented annually, determined by the player returning the lowest aggregate of 4 net scores. There is also a runner up declared. Jai Turnbull has been our long-time convenor, and we truly appreciate her help in keeping track of scores throughout the season.
Ladies Member Guest
The LMG is scheduled for Tuesday, June 11th. The event, Fairways With Friends, is set to be an unforgettable day where members and their guest will have the opportunity to really appreciate our golf course. Participants are asked to wear black and/or white. The cost will be$260.00 (total for member & guest).
Member Charity Event
New this year, is the Member Charity Event that will be held on Tuesday, June 25th, the day of our Solheim Cup. The Ladies Executive would like to start this, hopefully new tradition, by supporting the Burlington Food Bank who has been serving Burlington since 1991 through community support of food and monetary donations. Recently, they have seen a substantial increase in usage especially among families with children. In January alone they served 817 people with 40% of them being children.
The losing Solheim Cup team might just have to assist us by carrying all the supplies donated to the Burlington Food Bank vehicle....Just saying! More details to follow.
Pencil in Thursday, July 25th for this year’s Mystery Tour. Unfortunately, we have to limit the number of participants to 30 (at the request of our host club). If there are over 30 participants signed up within 24 hours, a draw will be held to determine the lucky participants. A wait list will be established in case of cancellations. Breakfast will be served at the golf course prior to boarding the bus. You will enjoy a round of golf followed by lunch. The cost and details are being finalized.
Ladies Presidents Day
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Ladies Presidents Day. The event has been scheduled for Thursday, August 22nd.
Senior Club Championship Weekend
In response to the results of the survey held in the fall, the Senior Ladies Club Championship weekend will be combined with the Senior Men Club Championship. This is a two day event that will be held July 20th and July 21st.
Club Championship Weekend
This event proved to be very popular last year. The combined Club Championship Weekend will be held on Labour Day Weekend (August 31st to September 2nd). Championship A, B, C & D flights will be a 3-day event with a cut after the second day.
Hunter Armitage Tournament
The tournament is scheduled for Tuesday, September 3rd and will be held at Dundas Valley. Everyone is encouraged to participate. This event involves 4 other area clubs besides BGCC: Dundas Valley, Glendale, Beverly and Chedoke. Stay tuned for more details.
The Golf Committee has implemented the Handicap Committee’s recommendation to ensure that all participants of golf events have a handicap that is reflective of their level of play. Last year a minimum 80% score entry was required to participate in any BGCC golf event. This year, the minimum will be increased to 90%. This will be a simple feat, since most members are already at 100%.
Three Interchanges are planned this year: BGCC to Hamilton (8 participants); BGCC to Mississaugua (12 participants) and Beverly to BGCC (12 participants). All handicap levels are invited to participate.
Junior Ladies Meet and Greet
The Ladies Executive will be hosting a Junior Ladies Meet and Greet on Monday, May 13th so that the junior ladies can meet their peers, provide input and learn more about the Ladies’ membership activities. We will play 9 holes followed by dinner.
The following Saturday dates are in place for the Business Women’s league:
- Opening Day: May 18th tee times at 1:00-1:30pm (followed by Wine & Cheese)
- June 1st tee times at 1:00-1:30pm
- July 6th tee times at 1:00-1:30pm
- August 10th tee times at 1:00 -1:30pm
- Closing Day: September 7th tee times at 1:00-1:30pm (followed by Wine & Cheese)
The cost of each tournament will be $10.00 (pay as you play). As well, this year, the business women will be able to sign up using the club registration system. Volunteers required for the PGA Tour at Hamilton GCC– June 3rd to 9th
Volunteers are still required for the Canada’s National Open Golf Championship being held at Hamilton Golf & Country Club the week of June 3rd to 9th (4 to 6 hours a day) on the Marshals Committee! If you’re able to help out, please contact Cheryl Hoshowsky, ASAP, by e-mail at email@example.com.
Last year, you were extremely helpful in allowing us to keep a ‘pulse’ on how our lady members were doing, by informing us of those undergoing surgery, suffering from illnesses, or experiencing loss.
